Rights and Protections for Pregnant and Parenting Students
- No Discrimination
Pregnant students cannot be excluded from college classes, activities or programs due to pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, abortion, or recovery.
- Reasonable Accommodations
Schools must provide reasonable adjustments for pregnant students, if needed, like those for students with temporary medical conditions. Examples could include extra breaks, online options, deadline extensions, or flexible scheduling.
- Excused Absences & Medical Leave
Absences for pregnancy or childbirth must be excused, for as long as a doctor deems medically necessary.
When a student returns, they should resume the same academic and extracurricular status, with opportunities to make up missed work.
Schools must offer any services available to students with temporary medical needs to pregnant students such as at-home tutoring or independent study.
- Protection from Harassment
Any harassment or negative treatment based on pregnancy (jokes or derogatory comments) is prohibited under Title IX. A student cannot be retaliated against for asserting their rights or requesting accommodation under Title IX.
Find support
Many college students are also parents. Research shows that 1 in 5 undergraduate college students are pregnant or parenting.
Parents in College By the Numbers – IWPR
This means that many students have found a way to continue their education while being a parent. This may sound difficult, but the key is to find a strong support system. Your support system might be your partner, boyfriend, close friends, family members or a combination of all of these. Be sure to surround yourself with people you trust and know will be a positive influence on you and your child. These trusted people can help you get to appointments and assist with errands or childcare while you attend classes or work.
