Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant can be emotional enough. But when your partner doesn’t support the pregnancy, or doesn’t support you, it can make the situation feel even more unstable and scary.

Perhaps your partner has told you they don’t want a baby. Maybe they’re pressuring you to have an abortion, threatening to end the relationship, or refusing to talk about the pregnancy altogether. Or perhaps they’re simply emotionally distant, leaving you to wonder what comes next.

If this is your situation, take a deep breath. While you can’t control your partner’s response, you can take steps to protect your health, understand your options, and make a decision that’s right for you.

Read on to learn how to navigate not having a supportive partner, or contact Mercy Women’s Center to find a safe space to talk and get support.

Give Yourself Time to Process Your Own Feelings

When someone you care about has a strong opinion, it’s easy to lose sight of your own.

Before making any pregnancy decision, ask yourself:

  • What do I want?
  • If I weren’t worried about my partner’s reaction, how would I feel about this pregnancy?
  • Am I making this decision because it reflects my own values, or because I’m afraid of losing the relationship?

It’s normal to want your partner’s support, but your fears about the relationship shouldn’t be the only factor driving your decision.

An unexpected pregnancy is a life-changing event. But you deserve the opportunity to ask questions and carefully consider your options before making a permanent choice.

Learn About All of Your Pregnancy Options

When your partner isn’t supportive, it can feel like your choices are limited.

In reality, this is one of the most important times to gather accurate information, and in fact, your well-being depends on making your own decision. For example, studies have shown that when women feel pressured into an abortion, they’re more likely to experience negative mental health effects, like depression and anxiety.

One important way to learn more about the options available is to get an ultrasound.

An ultrasound can determine:

  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus, which rules out a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy.
  • Whether the pregnancy appears to be developing or if you’ve miscarried.
  • Approximately how far along you are (certain options, like medical abortion, are only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is 10 weeks gestation or under).

It’s also important to learn about all of your pregnancy options. Take time to understand what parenting, adoption, and abortion each involve, along with the practical, physical, and emotional considerations of each choice.

The more informed you are, the more confident you’ll be that your decision is based on facts rather than fear or pressure.

Don’t Walk Through This Alone

When a partner isn’t supportive, it’s easy to feel isolated.

But chances are, other people in your life care about you and want to help.

Consider reaching out to a trusted family member, close friend, pastor, mentor, counselor, or pregnancy center advocate. Sometimes simply talking through your concerns with someone who will listen without judgment can bring clarity and reassurance.

If your partner is pressuring you into making a decision you don’t want to make, remember that healthy relationships are built on respect, not coercion.

You deserve to be heard. You deserve to ask questions. And you deserve to make your pregnancy decision without being manipulated or threatened.

Surrounding yourself with people who will support you emotionally and practically can make a tremendous difference during this time.
